The Trojan Horse is perhaps history's most famous deceptive gift. Presented as an offering, it concealed the very force that would bring about Troy's destruction. Greek mythology contains several variations on the same idea. Prometheus gives humanity fire - a forbidden gift that advances civilization while simultaneously introducing suffering and punishment, most notably in the form of Pandora (= "all gifts") and her "box" whose opening unleashes misery upon the world.
