UPDATE (May 18): In light of today’s high school mass shooting in Sata Fe, Texas which left 9 students and a teacher dead, I decided to reup this article and make it public (originally published on May 16) as I feel the “coded message” being discussed here is not only timely but also potentially representing – not to sound too dramatic but – a “final warning” of sorts for America…
The hottest music video right now that has everyone talking is “This Is America” by Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover (American actor, comedian, director, producer, singer, rappers, songwriter, and DJ). Ever since its release back on May 5th, timed to coincide with his appearance on Saturday Night Live as the host, people have been obsessed with this shocking, cryptic video, trying their best to decode its symbolism. As of this writing, the Youtube video has 130 million views and rapidly climbing.
Normally I don’t focus on hip-hop music videos but I felt the Force was strong with this one… (Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out later this month.)

The gist of the underlying symbolism has to do with racism, gun violence, and in particular how America gets distracted by entertainment while chaos spreads. I think the “wisdom of the crowd” has done a pretty good job interpreting the video pertaining to all these issues. In this article I’d like to focus on the enigmatic ending sequence which hasn’t been sufficiently decoded by anyone yet.
First, “behold a pale horse”: As Childish Gambino and school children continue to dance around while America burns, we see a white horse with a dark rider running across the screen in the background.
People naturally saw in it an allusion to one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Book of Revelation. The pale horse in this context is named “Death“.
After fatally shooting a peaceful man and a church choir for no apparent reason, Childish Gambino once again reaches for his gun near the end sending school children fleeing. This time he is only pretending with an imaginary gun in his hand. Silence lingers for exactly 17 seconds…
This, as noted by others, is a reference to the recent high-school mass shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 students and staff members dead. In a powerful coincidence, on May 5th, the day “This Is America” was released on Youtube, the Parkland high school students observed 17 seconds of silence for the victims during their senior prom.
So it was indirectly being implied that he did shoot the kids, in part due to the sensitive nature of showing a mass shooting of children. They drew a line there. A line not to be crossed.
The Parkland high-school massacre surpassed the 1999 Columbine High School massacre as the deadliest high school shooting in US history. Childish Gambino lighting up a joint during the 17-second silence was alluding to this fact. Columbine happened on April 20th or cannabis day.
The long, powerful silence also reflects the threshold being reached with children being massacred. This is where the line was being crossed. This has the ultimate consequence… Hell.
This is why Childish Gambino’s character follows “Death” of the Apocalypse, per Revelation 6:8: “Hell” follows “Death”…
Childish Gambino, now representing “Hell”, climbs onto the roof of a blood-red car and starts dancing. In all, there are 13 (old & empty or “dead”) cars.
The scene is Hell. Cars are cards. The 13th tarot card is “Death” typically depicting a Grim Reaper on a pale horse, matching the symbolism of the preceding scene. “Tarot” means “blood orange” (the fruit) which is blood red in color.
Having sealed America’s fate, Child Gambino – representing Death/Hell/Grim Reaper as well as entertainment/distraction/illusion/mind control – is dancing on the grave of America in hell.
R&B singer SZA is also in the final scene representing Lady Liberty or America (confirmed via her Instagram), doubling down on the hidden symbolism.
America… in Hell… dead.
The symbolism is underscored by the outro which people have compared to the “sunken place” in the 2017 movie Get Out.
The “sunken place” is obviously hell.

On May 5th Childish Gambino not so subtly acknowledged this when he arranged his This Is America performance on Saturday Night Live to be introduced by the actor who played the main character in Get Out. “Saturday” (as in Saturday Night Live) is “Saturn’s Day” and Saturn is traditionally associated with death/Grim Reaper.
The “sunken place” (hell) is a mental prison literally produced by mind control (hypnosis) in the story.
Has America been thoroughly mind controlled into walking straight into hell? Is it too late to wake up from the sunken place? Is something big about to happen that will more outwardly express the “end of America”?
